Laser Assisted Hatching (LAH)

What is Laser Hatching

Laser-assisted hatching (LAH) is a specialized technique used to increase the success rate of embryo implantation during in vitro fertilization (IVF). It is done for embryo biopsy for diagnosis of genetic diseases. It involves the precise application of a laser beam to create a small opening or thinning in the outer shell (zona pellucida) of the embryo.

This process is performed shortly before embryo transfer to facilitate hatching, allowing the embryo to break free from its protective layer and implant more effectively into the uterine lining.

Laser Hatching procedure

Procedure

The LAH procedure happens on the 3rd day or 5th day (blastocyst) after the IVF cycle while the embryo is still in the lab. Using a special laser, a tiny hole is made in the zona pellucida, which is like a shell around the embryo, allowing the embryo to hatch more easily.

This delicate procedure is performed by our skilled embryologists in a laboratory setting, ensuring optimal safety and accuracy. After laser-assisted hatching, the embryo is transferred into the uterus during the IVF procedure, where it can implant and develop into a pregnancy.

Why is it done?

Laser-assisted hatching is recommended for individuals or couples undergoing IVF who may benefit from improved embryo implantation. This technique is particularly beneficial for:

advanced maternal age

Women older than 35age may have embryos with thicker zona pellucida, making it harder for them to hatch and implant naturally.

previous ivf failures

Couples who have experienced multiple failed IVF cycles may opt for laser-assisted hatching to increase the chances of successful implantation.

poor embryo quality

Embryos with thicker or harder zona pellucida may have difficulty hatching on their own, making laser-assisted hatching a valuable option to improve their viability.

poor implantation failure

Individuals who have experienced recurrent implantation failure despite good-quality embryos may benefit from laser-assisted hatching.

frozen embryo transfer

Laser-assisted hatching can enhance the success of frozen embryo transfer by facilitating the hatching process before implantation.

embryo biopsy

Laser hatching is done when there are multiple pregnancies, multiple abortions, and the chromosome analysis of the couples is normal.
