Intrauterine means “inside the uterus” thus, Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment that involves placing carefully prepared sperm directly inside the uterus through a catheter. IUI should be opted for in case of mild male and female factor infertility with bilateral open fallopian tubes. We must also see the duration of infertility, the cause of infertility and the age of the couple.
This method is used when couples are not able to conceive naturally, providing a simpler and less invasive alternative to other fertility procedures. By washing the sperm and selecting only the highest motile sperm, IUI enhances the chances of successful fertilization. Additionally, fertility drugs may be prescribed to stimulate egg production and synchronize ovulation, further increasing the chances of conception. Whether using the partner’s sperm or donor sperm, the goal of IUI is to bring sperm closer to the egg in high numbers thus maximising the chances of fertilization.
The IVF process involves several key steps
Making upto 2-3 eggs by oral medicines or injections in female partner.
Semen is collected from your partner or a sperm donor and undergoes a process called “sperm washing” to separate healthy, motile sperm from other sperm.
During a brief and minimally invasive procedure, a thin catheter is inserted through the cervix and into the uterus. The prepared sperm is then deposited directly into the uterus, bypassing the cervix and vagina.
You may experience mild cramping or spotting after the procedure, but these are usually temporary. Follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor progress. You will be prescribed some medicines and injections to improve your success rate.
A pregnancy test is typically performed after 16-18 days of IUI.
